Statement on California's Proposed Ethnic Studies Curriculum

We are pleased by California State Board of Education officials’ announcement that the state’s proposed ethnic studies curriculum does not meet the goals of being “accurate, free of bias [and] appropriate for all learners in our diverse state.” It is shocking that a curriculum that addresses bigotry and hatred of so many types, including Islamophobia, omits any discussion of antisemitism, which motivated a synagogue shooting in Poway only four months ago.

We thank the California Legislative Jewish Caucus and the other groups and individuals who have spoken out about the flaws in the proposed legislation. We look forward to a revised curriculum that meets the goal of alleviating prejudice and bigotry and aligns with Governor Newsom's vision of a California for all, including Jews.
