SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: New Conversations on the Holocaust with Dr. Peter Tokofsky
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust is continuing a new monthly program "Let's Talk About It: New Conversations on the Holocaust". This free series will further explore the Holocaust in contemporary contexts. The BYO brown-bag lunch-and-learns will be held at the Museum on the first Friday of the month from 12:00-1:00 PM. The program for August will be led by Peter Tokofsky. Peter Tokofsky is Education Specialist for Academic Programs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Germanic Languages at UCLA. He also directs the UCLA travel study program to Austria and Germany. His research and publications focus on German cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Peter Eisenman's "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe" marks a turning point in memorialization of the Holocaust. On the one hand, the discussion and competition leading up to the selection of this memorial prompted innovative thinking about the nature of memorials. On the other hand, the popular success of the Eisenman memorial has spawned many more memorials throughout Germany. In this presentation, Peter Tokofsky discusses many of these memorials and suggests ways to evaluate their effectiveness as sites of memory. Focusing on Berlin, the talk explores the relationship between memorialization of World War II and of the Berlin Wall and its victims.
